CHRISTIANS AND HISTORY
Everybody knows that a credible explanation of any human affair, like government, has to arise out of a historical context. Governments do not just pop up like a flower out of the ground. They are fashioned by human hands that are themselves fashioned by the environment that gave growth to the human hands. In order to explain the things humans have wrought, it is necessary to explain the events that made those humans act the way they acted.
Christians in this nation have spent the last generation trying to convince everyone that the government of the United States was designed two hundred years ago to be a Christian government ruled by the principles found in Holy Scripture. In this attempt to persuade the nation, Christians have accomplished one thing to date: they have convinced most people in this nation that Christians are absolutely committed to destroying historical fact.
It is a historical fact known to most every high school student in this nation that Thomas Jefferson was a man who deleted from his Bible every passage that did not fit his explanation of reality. The point is obvious to all who have eyes to see: Thomas Jefferson read the Bible, but he treated it as any other book, picking and choosing what he wanted to learn. Yet Thomas Jefferson was a Founding Father of the United States of America. It is obvious to all that if Thomas Jefferson was a Christian, he was a totally different species of Christian from the Bible thumping Christians who claim hegemony over the government of the United States of America for the Words found in their Bible.
Now this is historical fact. In order for Christians to persuade people that this government was designed to be a Christian government founded on the principles in Holy Scripture, Christians have to ignore men like Thomas Jefferson. When Christians ignore Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin and any of a dozen other prominent Revolutionary leaders who defied the Christian World View, they destroy historical fact. All reasonable people in this nation understand that those who arrive at a definition of Truth by destroying historical fact are not pursuing Truth but are after other game.
Power, not truth, is the goal of those who manipulate past historical fact in order to manipulate the view of reality held by people in the present. The whole world knows this. And the world also knows that there are few things on this planet more frightening than Christians when they have committed themselves to seizing power rather than Truth.
Why are Christians in pursuit of power frightening? Historical fact demonstrates what happens when Christians set their minds on government power. Image after image scurries through the mind of modern man like some nightmare from a Hieronymus Bosch painting: the Inquisition, the stake, the rack, the Crusades, Cromwell's axe on the neck of the king, the mournful cry of the witches at Salem, the eery glow from the burning cross lighting the hooded Klansmen. It is these images that today's Christians have conjured up in the mind of modern man as they have gone about constructing a historical analysis designed to prove that this government was created to uphold and defend the principles found in the Holy Bible.
A measure of the hold that willful ignorance presently has over vast portions of the Christian community in the USA is seen in how amazed Christians become when told they are perceived to be a threat to human rights by a significant majority of people in this nation. Who? Us? Like the radical feminists say, They just don't get it.
Well, we're going to have to get it--one way or the other. That which is hidden today will be revealed tomorrow. Christians are going to have to wake up and see that their job is to seek the Truth; and that the way to the Truth is a straight and narrow path paved by historical fact. To ignore historical fact is anathema resulting in excommunication from the counsels of reasonable people in this nation and the world. Christians have a choice: either pay attention to historical fact now and maintain access to the minds of the people on this planet, or continue to ignore historical fact now and wake up in the future when Christians have lost the right to say anything at all about the God who revealed Himself in Holy Scripture.
